Privacy Policy
BuilderMatch™
Effective September 24, 2026 · Version 1.10
BuilderMatch™ is operated by Steel Grey Media, LLC, a Nebraska limited liability company. This policy explains what we collect when you use buildermatch.app, why we collect it, who sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it.
We have tried to write this so it can be read rather than survived. Where a plain sentence and a legal sentence would say the same thing, we used the plain one.
What BuilderMatch is, and what it is not
BuilderMatch is an introduction service. We match homeowners with builders, remodelers, and lenders based on the details of a project.
We are not a contractor, a lender, a mortgage broker, or a real estate agent. We are not a party to any agreement you reach with a builder or a lender, we do not receive referral fees, and we are not paid based on whether you contact anyone or whether any work or loan results.
What we collect
Information you give us
When you create an account: your name and email address. You can add the state and ZIP code where you live, and change them at any time. We record whether you agreed to marketing messages, when you accepted our terms, and which version of this policy was in effect at the time.
We do not ask homeowners for a phone number.
When you describe a project: the type of project, your budget range, when you want to start, the age of your home, whether you own the land, what features matter to you, and the city, state, and ZIP code where the work would happen. We convert that ZIP code to approximate coordinates so we can measure distance to nearby firms. We do not collect or store your street address.
When you answer financing questions: how you expect to pay for the project, whether you have spoken to a lender, and whether you are already pre-qualified.
If you choose to submit proof of financing: the name of the lender, the approved amount range, and the expiration date.
Here is exactly what happens to a qualification letter you upload, because it is the most sensitive thing we ask for. The file goes to private storage that nobody can browse. It is then sent to Google's document-reading service, which returns the lender name, an amount, and the dates. We convert the amount to a range, discard the exact figure, and delete the file. Google processes the document on our behalf under a paid agreement that prohibits using it to train their models, and retains nothing.
The whole sequence takes a few seconds. If the reading is unclear, the file is held for an administrator to look at, and deleted within thirty days at the latest. We do not keep the letter, and we do not show anyone the exact approved figure, only a range.
When you contact a firm: the content of your inquiry and of any messages you exchange through the app.
If you write a review: the review text, the rating, the project type, and the name you choose to publish it under.
Information we collect automatically
We log activity inside the app so we can tell what is working and report accurate figures to the firms who advertise with us. This includes pages viewed, matches shown, profiles opened, and links clicked, along with a session identifier and, where you are signed in, your account identifier.
What a firm receives from this is a count, such as views this month. These events are never used to build an advertising profile of you, and they are not sold or given to anyone.
Our hosting providers keep standard server logs that include IP address, browser type, and timestamps.
We use cookies and similar browser storage for one purpose: keeping you signed in and remembering your place. We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not permit third parties to track you across other websites through our app.
What we never collect
We want this stated plainly, because these are the things people worry about when a website starts asking about money.
We do not ask for or store your Social Security number, your credit score, your credit report, your bank or card numbers, or your tax returns. We do not run credit checks. We do not take loan applications. We do not process payments from homeowners, because homeowners do not pay us anything.
How we use what we collect
To match your project to builders, remodelers, and lenders who fit it
To deliver your inquiries and messages, and to notify a firm that one arrived
To let you see your own projects, inquiries, and saved firms when you return
To tell you when firms matching your project become available in your area, if you asked us to
To report advertising performance to lenders and vendors, in aggregate
To improve matching, including tuning how much weight each factor carries
To detect misuse, enforce our terms, and keep accounts secure
To answer you when you contact us
We do not make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. Match ordering is a recommendation, not a decision about you, and you remain free to contact any firm on the list or none of them.
Who sees your information
Builders and remodelers you contact
When you send an inquiry, the firm receiving it sees the details of your project, which includes the type of work, the age of your home, whether you own the land, and the features you said matter to you. They also see your budget range, your timeline, your general location, and your financing status, including whether your financing has been verified and the range it falls in. They see your name and the contact details you provide so they can respond.
The firm is shown which of these came from your answers and which we reviewed ourselves, so nothing you reported is presented to them as though we confirmed it.
They do not see an exact approved loan amount, and they do not see your inquiries to other firms.
A firm sees your information only after you choose to contact it. Browsing matches does not send anything to anyone.
Lenders
We do not send your information to lenders, with one exception you control. If you upload a qualification letter and ask us to have your own lender confirm it, we give that lender your name, your project type, and the amount range from your letter, and nothing else. They see it when they sign in to their own BuilderMatch account. We do not put any of it in an email or a text message. That only happens when you ask for it, and you are shown exactly what will be shared before you decide. You can skip it.
Otherwise, nothing about you reaches a lender. Lenders pay a flat monthly fee to appear in the financing section. That fee does not change based on whether you contact them, and we receive nothing if you do. If you follow a link or call a number on a lender's profile, you are dealing with that institution directly and their privacy practices apply from that point forward.
Service providers
We use a small number of vendors to run the service. They process information on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.

Payments from the firms who advertise with us
Homeowners never pay us, so none of this touches you. Where a firm pays a subscription, its card details go to Stripe and are held by Stripe. We never see or store a card number.
Legal and business circumstances
We may disclose information if required by law, or where we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights or safety of a person. If the business is sold or merged, information may transfer as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.
What we do not do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell or rent contact lists to anyone.
Reviews are public
A review you publish, including the name you attach to it, is visible to anyone using the app. Treat it as public writing.
How long we keep things
Information
Kept
Qualification letters you upload
Deleted after review. Only lender name, amount range, and expiration date are retained.
Account and profile information
While your account is open, then removed or anonymized after closure
Projects, inquiries, and messages
While your account is open. Records of a completed introduction may be retained in limited form for dispute resolution and reporting.
Reviews
Retained after account closure unless you ask us to remove them, since removing them would misrepresent a firm's history
Usage logs
Deleted after 24 months
An account you started but never signed in to
Deleted automatically after 30 days if it holds nothing
Where we are required to keep something longer for legal or tax reasons, we do.
Your choices
See what we have. Ask and we will provide a copy of the personal information associated with your account.
Correct it. Most of it you can edit directly in the app. For anything you cannot reach, ask us.
Delete it. You can ask us to close your account and delete your information. Some records may persist where we are required to keep them, and reviews are handled as described above.
Stop marketing messages. Marketing email is sent only if you asked for it, and you can switch it off at any time in the Privacy section of your account. We do not currently send text messages to homeowners. If that changes, replying STOP will stop them, and we will tell you before the first one arrives.
Notifications tied to an active inquiry, such as a builder responding to you, or to a request you made to be told when firms become available, are part of the service rather than marketing. Stopping those means closing the account.
Take it with you. Ask and we will provide your information in a portable format.
Tell a firm to stop. In any conversation you can ask that firm not to contact you. Their messages stop reaching you, they are removed from your future match results, and they are told you have asked not to be contacted further by any channel, not only in the app. You can undo it.
Their agreement with us requires them to honor that request by phone and email too, and continuing is a breach of it. If a firm contacts you anyway, tell us from the same place. We read every one.
Depending on where you live, state law may give you additional rights, including the right to appeal a decision we make about a request. We apply the choices above to everyone regardless of state, because maintaining different standards by geography is more likely to produce mistakes than protection.
Most of this is reachable without writing to us. The Privacy section of your account screen has a toggle for marketing email, which takes effect immediately, along with "Request my data" and "Delete my account" options, each of which opens a pre-filled message to us.
To exercise any of these, or anything not on that screen, write to privacy@buildermatch.app. We will verify that the request comes from you, which generally means confirming control of the account email, and respond within 30 days. A person handles each request, and we confirm to you once it is done.
We will not deny you service, charge you differently, or degrade your matches because you exercised a privacy right.
Security
Information is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with access controls that limit each account to its own records. Builders cannot read other builders' inquiries, and lenders cannot read each other's profiles.
No system is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise. If a breach affecting your personal information occurs, we will notify you and the appropriate authorities as required by law.
Children
BuilderMatch is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 to create an account. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
Where information is processed
BuilderMatch operates in the United States and our providers process information in the United States. If you use the app from outside the United States, you are sending your information here.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes materially, we will post the revised version with a new effective date and notify account holders. Your account record stores which version was in effect when you agreed, so it is always possible to establish what you were shown.
Continuing to use the app after a change means the revised policy applies.
